When to use this calculator
This flagship calculator adds materials, labor, overhead, packaging and material waste into a total cost.
It then sets a selling price from your target profit margin or target markup, after platform and payment fees that are taken from the price.
Wholesale is shown as 2× cost and retail as 4× cost so you can compare a simple keystone structure with your fee-aware price.
How this calculator works
How we calculate this
- Labor cost = hours × hourly rate
- Waste = materials × waste %
- Total cost = materials + labor + overhead + packaging + waste
- If you target margin: price = (cost + fixed payment fee) / (1 − margin − fee %)
- If you target markup: price = (cost × (1 + markup) + fixed payment fee) / (1 − fee %)
- Profit = price − fees − cost. Margin = profit / price. Markup = profit / cost.
Example
Example: a small leather pouch
Materials $12.40, 1.5 hours at $20/hr, overhead $3.10, packaging $1.75 and 8% material waste. Platform fees 6.5% plus 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing. Target margin 50%.
- Labor is $30.00 — already more than materials.
- Waste on materials is $0.99.
- Total cost is $48.24.
- A 50% margin after ~9.4% fees needs a price well above 2× cost because fees are a slice of the selling price.
How much should I charge?
Charge the recommended price if it covers your time. If the market will not bear it, reduce labor, simplify the design, or sell through a channel with lower fees — do not quietly drop labor to zero.
If you wholesale, start from the wholesale line (2× cost) and confirm the retailer can still mark up. Direct-to-customer prices can sit closer to the fee-aware recommended price or the 4× retail check.
Pricing tips
- Put a real hourly rate in, even if you currently pay yourself nothing.
- Count packing and listing photos in labor or overhead, not as free time.
- Use margin when you think in “what I keep from the customer’s payment.”
- Use markup when a wholesale buyer talks in multiples of cost.
- Re-run the numbers when your blank or leather price changes by more than a few percent.
Common mistakes
- Treating a 50% markup as a 50% margin.
- Ignoring payment processing on low-priced items where the fixed fee is large.
- Pricing from materials only because “I would be making it anyway.”
- Copying a factory-made listing and assuming your hours are comparable.

How much should I charge for a handmade product?
Add materials, labor, overhead, packaging and waste, then choose a price that leaves your target profit after fees. That recommended price is the primary result of this calculator.
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit divided by cost. Margin is profit divided by selling price. On a $10 cost and $20 price, markup is 100% and margin is 50%.
Should I include labor if I make things at home?
Yes if you want the price to pay for the work. Home overhead can be smaller, but the hours are still hours.
