When to use this calculator

This calculator provides accurate pricing for custom memory, graduation, and athletic T-shirt quilts.

It calculates total square footage from your shirt block count (e.g. 12, 16, 20, 24, 30 shirts), fusible interfacing, sashing fabric, batting, backing, and longarm quilting charges.

It gives you both a total custom quilt price and a clean “price per block” rate to quote customers instantly.

How this calculator works

How we calculate T-shirt quilt pricing

  1. Quilt area = block count × block area (with 20% sashing/border buffer)
  2. Stabilizer cost = block count × fusible interfacing cost per block
  3. Materials = stabilizer + sashing fabric + batting + backing fabric
  4. Longarm quilting fee = quilt area sq in × longarm rate per sq in
  5. Labor cost = (prep & stabilizing hours + piecing & sewing hours) × hourly rate
  6. Total cost = materials + longarm + labor + packaging
  7. Recommended price = total cost ÷ (1 − margin % − fee %)
  8. Price per block = recommended price ÷ shirt block count

Example

Example: 20-shirt graduation memory quilt

A 20-shirt quilt (14×14 in blocks, approx. 62×76 in finished). Fusible interfacing is $1.80/block. Sashing $18.00, batting $22.00, backing $30.00. 4 hrs prep/stabilizing, 5 hrs piecing/binding at $22/hr. Longarm quilting at $0.025/sq in. 40% margin, 6.5% platform fee.

  • Total materials cost is $106.00 (including $36.00 in stabilizer).
  • Longarm edge-to-edge quilting is $117.60.
  • Labor cost is $198.00 (9 hours total).
  • Total production cost is $429.60.
  • Recommended retail price is $802.99 ($40.15 per shirt block).

How much should I charge?

Basic grid layout (no sashing): $25.00–$35.00 per shirt block.

Standard layout with sashing & cornerstones: $35.00–$48.00 per shirt block.

Variable-size mosaic / collage design: $50.00–$70.00 per shirt block due to custom layout math.

Pricing tips

  • Always use a quality lightweight woven fusible interfacing (like Pellon 911FF or SF101) to keep knit T-shirt jersey from stretching out of square.
  • Charge extra for difficult items like nylon jerseys, thick sweatshirts, pockets, or collar preservation.
  • Collect a 50% non-refundable deposit before cutting into irreplaceable customer memory shirts.

Common mistakes

  • Underestimating rotary cutting and interfacing prep time: stabilizing 20+ shirts takes hours before sewing starts.
  • Forgetting longarm quilting fees when quoting the customer.
  • Not specifying a minimum block charge for baby clothes or small graphic patches.
