When to use this calculator

Calculates exact material expenses and prices for permanent adhesive vinyl decals, car window stickers, and lettering.

Computes vinyl cost per square inch from roll dimensions, adds transfer tape, weeding labor, rigid packaging mailers, and marketplace fees.

How this calculator works

How vinyl decal cost is calculated

  1. Roll area (sq in) = roll length (ft) × 12 × roll width (in)
  2. Cost per sq in = roll price / roll area
  3. Vinyl cost = decal area (width × height) × cost per sq in
  4. Materials = vinyl + transfer tape + (materials × waste %)
  5. Total cost = materials + weeding labor + rigid mailer & card
  6. Recommended price = total cost / (1 − target margin − platform fee %)

Example

Example: 4×3 in outdoor vinyl car decal

12 sq in decal from a 15 ft × 12 in roll ($12 roll), $0.003/sq in transfer tape, 4 min weeding labor ($1.20), $0.75 rigid stay-flat mailer, 55% margin.

  • Vinyl material cost is only $0.07, and transfer tape is $0.04.
  • Labor ($1.20) and rigid mailer ($0.75) make up the majority of production cost ($2.07 total).
  • Recommended selling price is $5.38 after 6.5% fees.

How much should I charge?

Small decals (3–4 in): $4.00 to $7.00.

Medium car decals (5–8 in): $8.00 to $15.00.

Large rear window / wall decals (10–18 in): $18.00 to $35.00+.

Pricing tips

  • Use cast vinyl (like Oracal 651 or 751) for outdoor waterproof durability.
  • Always ship in rigid stay-flat mailers with chipboard backing to prevent bending during postal transit.

Common mistakes

  • Pricing purely on vinyl square inches ($0.10) while ignoring weeding labor and postal packaging.
  • Using standard envelopes without rigid protection, leading to crushed decals and refund requests.

FAQ

How do I price custom vinyl decals to sell?

Calculate vinyl and transfer tape by square inches, add weeding labor and mailer costs, then apply a 50% to 60% profit margin.
