How handmade product pricing works

Start with the money that leaves your pocket: materials, packaging and a share of overhead such as tools, software, booth fees and studio costs.

Add labor at a real hourly rate. If you do not pay yourself, the business is not covering its largest input.

Decide whether you are targeting markup (profit divided by cost) or profit margin (profit divided by selling price). They are not the same number.

If you sell on Etsy, Shopify or at markets, build platform and payment fees into the price. Fees are taken from the selling price, not added after the customer pays.

FAQ

How do I price a handmade product?

Add materials, labor, packaging, overhead and waste, then set a price that leaves your target profit after fees. The Handmade Product Pricing Calculator does this in one place.

Should handmade prices include labor?

Yes. If you would not do the work for free for a stranger, labor belongs in the cost. Use an hourly rate you would pay someone else to do the same job.
