When to use this calculator

Calculates exact wax weight and fragrance oil amounts for wax melt clamshell batches, snap bars, and shaped tarts.

Calculates cost per clamshell and total batch cost, then suggests profitable retail prices based on fragrance load % and container costs.

How this calculator works

How wax melt cost is calculated

  1. Fragrance oil weight (oz) = wax weight (oz) × fragrance load %
  2. Wax cost = (wax oz / 16) × wax price per lb
  3. Fragrance cost = fragrance oz × fragrance price per oz
  4. Batch cost = wax + fragrance + molds/clamshells + dyes + labor + packaging + waste
  5. Cost per melt = total batch cost / clamshell count
  6. Recommended price per melt = total batch price / clamshell count

Example

Example: Batch of 10 wax melt clamshells (2.5 oz each)

25 oz soy wax ($3.50/lb = $5.47), 10% fragrance load (2.5 oz oil @ $2.20/oz = $5.50), 10 clamshells ($0.45 ea = $4.50), $1.00 dye/mica, 25 min labor ($7.50), $3.50 labels, 55% margin.

  • Total batch cost is $28.87 ($2.89 per clamshell).
  • Recommended retail price is $7.50 per clamshell after 6.5% fees.
  • Batch profit is $41.22.

How much should I charge?

Standard 6-cavity clamshells (2.5–3 oz) typically retail for $6.00 to $9.00 each.

Snap bars (1.5–2 oz) retail for $4.50 to $7.00 each.

Offer bundle pricing (e.g., 3 for $20 or 5 for $30) to increase average order value.

Pricing tips

  • Wax melts need higher fragrance load (9–12%) than candles because there is no open flame to burn off the scent.
  • Pour at the recommended wax manufacturer temperature to avoid melting thin plastic clamshells.

Common mistakes

  • Underestimating fragrance oil cost — fragrance is usually more expensive than the wax itself.
  • Forgetting clamshell container costs and warning label stickers.
