When to use this calculator
This calculator determines how many custom transfers fit onto a Direct-to-Film (DTF) gang sheet or continuous roll.
It tests both standard and 90-degree rotated orientations with your custom spacing margin to maximize sheet yield and minimize wasted film.
It calculates landed sheet cost (roll price + shipping + trimming labor), cost per individual transfer print, and quotes for finished heat-pressed shirts.
How this calculator works
How we calculate DTF gang sheets
- Slot width = design width + margin spacing; Slot height = design height + margin spacing
- Standard fit = floor(sheet width / slot width) × floor(sheet length / slot height)
- Rotated fit = floor(sheet width / slot height) × floor(sheet length / slot width)
- Total designs = max(standard fit, rotated fit)
- Landed sheet cost = sheet price + shipping + trim labor + waste allowance
- Cost per transfer = landed sheet cost ÷ total designs
- Total shirt cost = transfer cost + blank garment + heat press labor
- Recommended price = shirt cost ÷ (1 − margin % − fee %)
Example
Example: 22×60 inch DTF gang sheet with 10×10 inch prints
A 22×60 inch gang sheet costs $28.00 plus $5.00 shipping. Design is 10×10 inches with 0.5 inch spacing. Trimming takes 15 minutes at $20/hr. Blank shirts cost $4.25 with 2 minutes press time. 50% target margin and 6.5% platform fee.
- Calculates 2 designs across and 5 down = 10 total full-size front prints per sheet.
- Landed sheet cost with trimming labor is $39.40.
- True cost per individual DTF transfer is $3.94.
- Total shirt production cost (blank + transfer + press labor) is $8.86.
- Recommended custom shirt selling price is $20.37 (leaving $10.18 net profit per shirt).
How much should I charge?
Individual DTF transfer resale: charge $8.00–$14.00 per full-chest transfer (10×10 in) and $4.00–$6.00 for pocket logos.
Finished custom DTF pressed shirts: $20.00–$28.00 for single prints on quality blanks (Bella+Canvas 3001, Comfort Colors).
Wholesale / Bulk (25+ shirts): $14.00–$18.00 per shirt with volume discounts.
Pricing tips
- Leave at least 0.5 inches (12 mm) spacing between designs to allow clean cutting with rotary blades or scissors without clipping artwork.
- Fill empty corners or margins with small chest pocket logos, inside neck labels, or sleeve designs to get free extra transfers.
- Wider rolls (24-inch vs 22-inch) often provide significantly better nesting yield for standard 11-inch wide adult shirt graphics.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting trimming and weeding labor when ordering pre-printed gang sheets.
- Not factoring in shipping costs from your DTF print vendor when calculating unit transfer margins.
- Ignoring press prep time (pre-pressing garment moisture and secondary post-press parchment cure).
FAQ
What size is a standard DTF gang sheet?
Common roll widths are 22 inches (56 cm) and 24 inches (61 cm). Lengths typically range from 24 inches (2 feet) up to 240 inches (20 feet) or continuous rolls.
How much spacing should I leave between gang sheet designs?
Leave 0.5 inches (12 to 15 mm) between designs. This gives enough buffer for quick manual cutting or automated sheet cutters without damaging edges.
Is it cheaper to print in-house or buy DTF gang sheets?
Buying gang sheets is more cost-effective for shops doing under 50 shirts per week due to zero printer maintenance, white ink circulation, or clog risks.
