Packaging is box, fill and tape. Postage is the label you actually buy, plus insurance and any fuel surcharge. Packing minutes are labor. The recommended customer charge then covers those costs after the percent fee that platforms take on shipping.

- Postage = label + insurance
- Surcharge = postage × surcharge %
- Labor = packing minutes × hourly rate
- Your cost = packaging + postage + surcharge + labor
- Charge the customer = cost / (1 − handling margin − fee %) when valid
Example
Example: a shirt in a poly mailer
$0.85 mailer, $0.25 tissue, $0.20 tape and label, $8.50 postage, 8 minutes packing at $18/hr, 6.5% marketplace fee on shipping, 0% handling margin.
- Packing labor is about $2.40 — often more than the mailer.
- If Etsy takes a percent of shipping, charging exactly what you paid the carrier still loses money.
- Set handling margin above 0 only if packing should profit, not just break even.
How much should I charge?
Charge the recommended shipping amount so postage and packing are not taken from product margin. If you offer “free shipping,” add this cost into the item price instead.

- Heavier hoodies and framed prints need their own postage input.
