It calculates wet clay costs by weight, glaze dipping, electric kiln electricity and shelf space share for both bisque (cone 04) and glaze (cone 5/6) firings.
It factors in studio overhead, throwing/trimming/glazing labor, and an essential 10%–15% drying/firing breakage loss allowance.

How we calculate pottery pricing
- Clay cost = clay weight (lbs) × clay price per lb
- Materials = clay cost + glaze cost per piece + protective packaging
- Kiln firing = bisque firing electricity & wear + glaze firing electricity & wear
- Labor cost = (throwing/trimming hours + glazing/loading hours) × hourly rate
- Breakage allowance = (materials + firing + labor + overhead) × breakage loss %
- Total piece cost = subtotal + breakage allowance
- Recommended retail price = total cost ÷ (1 − margin % − fee %)
- Recommended wholesale price = total cost × 2 (keystone)
