Binding length is the perimeter plus extra for joins. Strips are cut from fabric width; yards come from strip width times number of strips.

How we calculate this
- Inches needed = 2 × (width + length) + extra
- Strips = ceil(inches needed / (fabric width − 2))
- Yards = (strips × strip width) / 36
Example
Example: 60×80 in quilt, 2.5 in strips, 42 in fabric
Perimeter 280 in plus joins. Several 2.5 in strips from 42 in fabric convert to a fraction of a yard — round up when you buy.
- Double-fold binding uses the strip width you actually cut.
- Wider bindings consume more yardage.
How much should I charge?
Binding fabric is cheap compared with quilting labor. Do not skip it in a customer quote.
